Dominican Republic earns historic result, USA wins at FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

MIAMI – The Dominican Republic earned a historic result with a 1-1 draw against New Zealand as the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup continued on Saturday in the Dominican Republic.

The United States earned a 2-nil victory against Colombia to earn its first three points of the campaign.

The Dominican Republic earns first point

The Dominican Republic tied 1-1 against New Zealand in Group A at CFC Stadium in Santiago De Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

The hosts managed to get a historical result in their second match, coming from behind to rescue a point.

New Zealand took the advantage in the 61’ from an own goal by Renata Mercedes, who was unable to clear the ball after a corner kick and sent it past her own goalkeeper Jaylene Rondon.

The Dominican Republic didn't give up and leveled the scoreline in the 68’ from a corner kick, as Yulenis Brito struck the first goal for the Caribbean nation in the tournament.

The next challenge for Las Quisqueyanas will come against group leaders Nigeria on Tuesday at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo. The home nation will seek to build on a point and rise from third place in the group.

The United States seals first victory 

The United States won 2-nil against Colombia in Group B at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo.

The U.S. paid took the lead just before halftime, following an intercepted the ball that finished with Micayla Johnson starting the goal count in the 43’.

The USA will face Korea Republic on Tuesday at CFC Stadium in Santiago De Los Caballeros. The U.S. are currently in second place and will look to stay within the top two spots in search of booking its spot in the quarterfinals.
