MIAMI, Florida – Canada took a step closer to qualifying for the 2023 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, while Sint Maarten collected their first win in Thursday’s action in CWU20 Qualifying.
Canada sit atop Group A after topping Cuba 4-0 at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.
It was quite the balanced performance from Canada, with a pair of goals in each half and two players accounting for the scoring. Florianne Jourde (12’, 44’) gave Canada a 2-0 halftime lead before Kayla Briggs (67’, 81’) came off the bench and added another two goals in the second half to complete the 4-0 scoreline.
It was the third win in three games for Canada, tying them on points with El Salvador (9). However, Canada own the tiebreaker on goal difference and only require a draw in Saturday’s group finale with El Salvador in Santo Domingo to clinch their CWU20 spot.
Earlier in the day at the Estadio Panamericano, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Martinique each collected their first point of the tournament in a 1-1 draw.
Areka Hooper (15’) supplied the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines goal, while Naya Peria (53’) found the back of the net for Martinique.
That concludes Martinique’s participation in the tournament, while Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will try to wrap up the group with a win against Cuba.
Sint Maarten earned their first win of the tournament in a 3-1 final with Bahamas in Group B play at the Rignaal Jean Francisca Stadium in Willemstad, Curacao.
N’Syree Supriana (39’), Jiarah Drijvers (48’) and Suze Van De Pas (84’) scored for Sint Maarten, while Bahamas got their goal from Alexis Williamson (53’).
Sint Maarten will now attempt to close the tournament with two consecutive wins as they face host nation Curacao in Willemstad on Saturday.
