Miami, FL – Concacaf has today confirmed that the official draw for the 2023 Concacaf W U-20 Championship will take place on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 11:00 am ET, in Miami, FL.
The draw will be widely available for fans across the region to follow and enjoy through the Confederation’s Official Platforms.
The competition in the Dominican Republic will feature the region’s new format for women’s youth competitions, beginning with an eight-team group stage played between Concacaf’s top eight teams, consisting of the top two ranked nations, the United States and Mexico, and the six qualifying stage winners, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Panama, and Puerto Rico.
After round-robin play, the two best teams from each group (four in total) will advance to the competition’s knockout stage. All knockout stage matches (semifinals, third-place match, and final) will be played in a single-match elimination format, with the two finalists and the third-place match winner qualifying for next year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
DRAW PROCEDURES
The official draw will be executed using a single-blind system and four pots. Based on the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Rankings as of September 2022, the eight participating teams will be distributed in Pots 1-4 as follows (top-ranked nations in Pot 1 and seeded, and listed in raking order per Pot):
Pot 1: USA (Group A) and Mexico (Group B)
Pot 2: Canada and Costa Rica
Pot 3: Jamaica and Puerto Rico
Pot 4: Dominican Republic and Panama
The draw will begin by placing the seeded nations (Pot 1) in their respective groups. Once these are confirmed, the two nations from Pot 2 will be drawn and placed in sequential order in Groups A and B. The same process will be followed with Pots 3 and 4.
At the end of the draw, each group will consist of four teams, with no more than one team from each Pot).
In the previous edition of the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, also played in the Dominican Republic, in 2022, the United States won its seventh title after defeating Mexico 2-0 in the final.
