SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Host nation Costa Rica will be looking to rebound from an opening loss in their second match of the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup against Spain.
The Ticas succumbed to Australia in their opening match of Group A, 3-1, but not before Costa Rica captain Alexandra Pinell scored what might go down as the goal of the tournament with a free kick rocket from 35-40 meters out.
Now, a new opportunity to earn their first points of the tournament presents itself on Saturday against Spain at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose. The Spaniards battled to a 0-0 draw with Brazil in their opening match, so a victory would give either side some needed momentum.
It will be the first ever U20 Women’s World Cup match between Costa Rica and Spain.
The other Concacaf nation in action on Saturday will be Mexico, who square off with Colombia in Group B at the Estadio Nacional as well.
El Tricolor picked up a point in their opening match, a 1-1 draw against New Zealand in which Mexico had the better run of play during the 90 minutes and were boosted by a good finish from Anette Vazquez.
Mexico take on a Colombia side that got a late goal to down Germany 1-0 in their opening match. The contest will be the first ever in a U20 Women’s World Cup between Mexico and Colombia.
