SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic A last-gasp goal lifted Mexico over Puerto Rico, while Guyana took care of business against Nicaragua to open Group D of the 2020 Women’s Under-20 Championship on Sunday at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo.

The hero of the day for El Tricolor was Alison Gonzalez, beginning with her penalty conversion in the 50’ to hand Mexico a 1-0 lead.

The Boricuas would answer though three minutes later in the 53’ on a score from Gabrielle Cimino, and it looked like that goal would hold up for a 1-1 draw, but in the waning seconds Gonzalez connected on a cross and redirected the ball into net for the 2-1 winner.

In the group’s other match, a strong start pushed Guyana past Nicaragua 3-1.

Aubrey Narine opened the scoring in the 19’, followed by goals from Jade Vuyfhuis in the 49’ and Serena McDonald in the 62’.

Jaclyn Gilday sparks hopes of a comeback for Nicaragua with a goal in the 64’, but in the end, the Guyana defense held firm to pocket the 3-1 win.
