MIAMI, Florida – There was no shortage of drama on Saturday at the 2022 Concacaf Women’s
Under-20 Championship in the Dominican Republic, as four more teams booked their place in the quarterfinal round with wins in the Round of 16.
The Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal was the venue for the day’s most dramatic contest in which Haiti found a late game-winning goal from Valentina Ornis to secure a 2-1 triumph
against Guyana.
Inari Moore scored in the 37’ to hand Guyana a 1-0 lead that they carried into the second half, but the 2020 CWU20 semifinalists would mount a comeback, beginning with Maudeline Moryl’s 1-1 equalizer in the 58’.
Just when it looked like it would end 1-1 after 90 minutes, Ornis was at the right spot at the right
time in the 88’ to steer home a deflection in front of the Guyana goal for the 2-1 Haiti victory.
The Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo bore witness to another tight affair in which three second half minutes made all the difference for Guatemala, who edged a valiant
Bermuda side, 2-0.
A tight, intense scoreless first 45 minutes gave way to a second half in which the two teams looked to open up, and it was Guatemala who found the finishing touch.
First it was an Elisa Texaj right-footed shot in the 56’ and then Daniela Xiquin via a header in the 58’ for the 2-0 Guatemala victory.
Panama and Jamaica faced off earlier in the day in San Cristobal, with the Canaleras collecting a 3-0 triumph.
A slick individual move and right-footed finish from Shayari Camarena gave Panama a 1-0 lead
in the 11’, followed by a Wendy Natis penalty conversion in the 39’ to make it 2-0 to Panama.
The Central Americans then added an insurance goal in the second half when Yasli Atencio’s left-footed shot from distance in the 62’ nailed down the 3-0 Panama win.
Mexico enjoyed another big win, as they defeated Curacao 9-0 in Santo Domingo.
Aylin Avilez (8’, 16’) has now scored in all four of Mexico’s matches after her brace on Saturday. Daniela Delgado (35’, 47’) also supplied a pair of scores and was joined on the scoresheet by
Alexia Villanueva (63’), Anette Vazquez (71’), Amanda Marroquin (73’), Paola Chavero (81’) and
Maritza Maldonado (84’).
