SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – It was a bountiful day for both the United States and Cuba in Group C of the 2020 Women’s Under-20 Championship on Monday at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo.
In a battle of the opening match victors, the United States came away with a 4-0 win over the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. was aided by a quick start, as a pair of Mia Fishel goals in the 3’ and 12’ sandwiched a score from Rebecca Jarrett in the 8’.
The four-time CUW champions then capped the day with a goal in the 65’ from Brianna Pinto.
In the nightcap, a balanced performance helped Cuba to a 6-1 victory against Honduras.
Maristania Mengana opened the scoring in the 21’ before Analia Cespedes doubled the margin in the 44’.
A Giselle Guzman own goal in the 53’ stretched the lead to 3-0, but Honduras would pull a goal back a minute later through Maylin Menjivar.
Any thoughts of a Honduras comeback would fall by the wayside though as a second goal from Cespedes in the 57’, followed by goals from Katheryn Rodriguez (70’) and Cecil Aldana (73’) sealed the win for the Cubans.
