PENONOME, Panama – The 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup continued as Vancouver Whitecaps FC won 2-1 against Santa Fe FC in Group B on Wednesday at the Estadio Universidad Latina in Penonome, Panama.
Coming from previous defeats, these two teams were looking to get their first set of points to continue their journey in the competition.
The visitors striked first in the 34’ thanks to a left-footed shot from distance by Jourdan Ziff, scoring Vancouver second goal of the W Champions Cup and the first in the group stage.
Vancouver goalkeeper Morgan McAslan made a stop against the home side from a corner kicks in the last minutes of the first half.
In the 58’ the hosts had another chance from the boots of Erika Lagos, shooting for goal but her effort ended in McAslan gloves.
Vancouver Whitecaps doubled their lead in the 78’ from a corner kick, as captain Brianne Reid got herself in the area to shoot past goalkeeper Carolina Lopez.
Santa Fe managed to pull one back in the last minutes of the game, in the 85’ after a foul that gave them a penalty kick. Maria Murillo was in charge of sending the ball to the back of the net, scoring the first goal for her team in the W Champions Cup.
Even though Santa Fe tried for the draw, the Whitecaps defensive line held on for the club’s second W Champions Cup win and first of the group stage.
Santa Fe will play their third game in the W Champions Cup September 19 when they travel to Mexico City to face Club America Femenil. Vancouver Whitecaps will seek another set of points on October 1 when they welcome San Diego Wave to BC Place.
