MIAMI, Florida – A Mexico team soaring with confidence will turn their attention to their next 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup challenge in a quarterfinal clash with Paraguay on Sunday night at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
El Tricolor roared to a historic 2-0 victory over rivals the United States in their group stage finale to claim the top spot in Group A, while snapping a 16-match losing streak to their northern neighbors in the process.
Two of the many heroes on the night were goal scorers Jacqueline Ovalle and Mayra Pelayo, who finished the group stage with three and two goals each, respectively. Ovalle also chipped in with two assists, making her one of the top performers in the first phase of the tournament.
There has been help in the back in a major way through Rebeca Bernal and Karen Luna. No player had more passes in the group stage than Bernal with 120, while Luna chipped in with a goal and an assist and played a big role in keeping the dangerous U.S. attack under wraps.
Mexico will take on a Paraguay side that finished second in Group C and showed great character in rallying from a late 2-1 deficit to El Salvador in their group stage finale to claim a 3-2 victory.
Jessica Martinez notched a hat-trick in that affair and will be one of the main players to watch in this one, as will Lice Chamorro, who had a goal and an assist in the group stage.

Overall, the series between these two sides resides in favor of Mexico with two wins and one defeat. Their last meeting came just this past October at the 2023 Pan American Games in a commanding 4-1 win for Mexico.
No doubt that a Mexico team bursting with confidence after their big win against the U.S. will be primed to take on Paraguay in this quarterfinal.
