MIAMI, Florida – Strikes from Maria Sanchez and Scarlett Camberos helped Mexico rally from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Puerto Rico 2-1 to open Group A of League A of the Road To W Gold Cup on Friday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Puerto Rico could not have asked for a better start, as they quieted the Azteca in the 11’ with a goal. Cristina Torres sent in a deep cross from the left wing for Juelle Love and the ball was deflected into net by Mexico DF Kimberley Rodriguez Cubero for a 1-0 Puerto Rico lead.
Mexico were unfazed and doubled their efforts at finding an equalizer. It would arrive in first half stoppage time via a free kick that was rocketed in by Sanchez into the top left corner of net for a 1-1 halftime scoreline.
El Tricolor then took their first lead of the night in the 59’ through Camberos, who picked up a ball at midfield and drove toward the Puerto Rico area before unleashing a right-footed shot that beat Puerto Rico GK Sydney Martinez for a 2-1 Mexico advantage.
Despite not finding an insurance goal in the final half-hour, Mexico stayed strong on the defensive end until the final whistle to pocket the three points.
