How the Concacaf W Qualifiers and Championship work

Published on

MIAMI, Florida – This week the road to the 2022 Concacaf W Championship kicks off with the Concacaf W Qualifiers, in which 30 Concacaf senior women’s national teams (all ranked 3 and below) split into six groups of five teams will look to secure a place in July’s Concacaf W Championship, joining the top two ranked nations in Concacaf, the United States and Canada.

The 2022 Concacaf W Championship will then determine which teams from the Concacaf region will qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

But the road to those prestigious two tournaments begins with the Concacaf W Qualifiers, in which the participating teams will all play two matches during the Women’s International Match Window of February (16-22), followed by another two matches in the April window (6-12).

At the conclusion of April’s window, each of the six group winners qualify for the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, which will take place in July.

The six Concacaf W Qualifiers group winners, along with the U.S. and Canada, will be split into two groups of four teams and will play round-robin format. The top two teams in each group will advance to the tournament semifinals and qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, the two third-place teams will advance to a FIFA Intercontinental Playoff.

The semifinals, final and third-place match of the Concacaf W Championship will be played in a single elimination format, with the winner of the tournament qualifying for both the 2024 Paris Olympics and the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup, to be held in 2024.

The Concacaf W Championship runner-up and third-place team will also square off in a Concacaf Olympic play-in series, scheduled for September 2023. The winner of the play-in will also qualify for 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup.
