MIAMI, Florida – World Cup qualification returns to the Concacaf region on Wednesday on the road to the deciding day of the first round on June 8.
The June matches kick off with Dominica and Anguilla meeting at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sánchez in the Dominican Republic in Group D. Both teams started out their qualification campaigns with a pair of defeats and will be eager to get a good result this time out.
Montserrat will hope to build on a pair of draws secured to start qualification when it squares off with the U.S. Virgin Islands in Group A. Montserrat captain Lyle Taylor was on the mark in stalemates with Antigua and Barbuda and El Salvador, putting him in contention for top goalscorer of the round, but USVI GK Lionel Brown and longtime captain Dusty Good may have something to say about that.
European-based forwards Onel Hernandez and Joel Apezteguia and defender Carlos Vazquez Fernandez are among Cuba players who made their national team debut in March and now return to seek out their first win as Los Leones del Caribe meet a British Virgin Island side also seeking its first point of qualification in Group C.
In Group B, a pair of teams are searching for their first victories of qualification with Cayman Islands and Aruba meeting at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Each are already eliminated from World Cup qualification but will be searching for a victory on which to build for the future.
The matchday closes in Group F at Mayaguez Athletics Stadium on the West Coast of Puerto Rico where Dave Sarachan’s side hosts the Bahamas. The visitors are still chasing their first point, but Puerto Rico’s draw with Trinidad and Tobago in March gives the Boricuas an outside shot at advancing from the group if they win Wednesday and next week against Guyana.
