Guatemala win big, home sides start undefeated in Second Round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying

MIAMI. - Four Concacaf nations are off to winning starts in the Second Round of Concacaf Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Word Cup Qualifying resumed in the region on Wednesday.

Suriname, Curacao, Nicaragua and Guatemala were the winning nations who earned three points to begin with a lead in their respective groups. Bermuda and Grenada took an away point from their trips to Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad and Tobago, respectively.

Antigua and Barbuda vs. Bermuda

Antigua and Barbuda drew 1-1 with Bermuda in Group A at the ABFA Technical Centre in Piggotts, Antigua and Barbuda.

Raheem Deterville opened the scoring in the 26’ with a hit from the inside of the penalty arc. The assist came from a long pass over the top by D’Andre Bishop.

Bermuda rescued a point in the 90’ with a strike in front of goal from Sachiel Ming. The tying goal came from a loose ball inside the box recovered by Kane Crichlow before assisting Ming.

Up next for Antigua and Barbuda is a trip to the Cayman Islands for its first away match on Saturday in George Town. Bermuda will host Honduras on Sunday at the Bermuda National Sports Centre.

Suriname vs. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Suriname earned a 4-1 victory over Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to open Group F at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Oalex Anderson put the visitors in front in the 31’ after intercepting a loose ball in the box.

Sheraldo Becker tied the match in the 39' from the penalty spot after Immanuel-Johannes Pherai was taken down in the box.

Jeredy Hilterman struck with a header in the box at the 45'+3 to put Suriname up before halftime. Immanuel-Johannes Pherai provided the long cross from the right flank.

Justin Lonwijk extended Suriname’s lead in the 46', connecting in front of goal with a pass from the right side by Gyrano Kerk.

Jaden Montnor added a fourth for Suriname in the 70', securing the three points in the nation’s home opener.

Suriname will visit Anguilla on Saturday at the Raymond E. Guishard Stadium in The Valley. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will remain in Suriname where it will host El Salvador on Sunday in the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium.

Trinidad and Tobago vs. Grenada

Trinidad and Tobago drew 2-2 with Grenada in Group B play at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Myles Hippolyte opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24’, converting from the penalty spot following a handball in the box. Hippolyte extended the lead in the 28’ off the volley to capitalize on a punched out ball from Trinidad goalkeeper Denzil Smith.

Ryan Telfer cut the deficit for the hosts in the 43', striking inside the box on a through ball from Reon Moore. Moore went on to equalize the encounter in the 74’ on a counter attack.

Trinidad and Tobago now shifts gear to its first away test against the Bahamas on Saturday in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis. Grenada will host Costa Rica on Sunday in St. George's.

Curaçao vs. Barbados

Curaçao began its campaign with a 4-1 victory against Barbados in Group C action at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Willemstad, Curaçao.

Rangelo Janga opened the scoring in the 25’ with a hit in front of goal. Janga extended the lead in the 62’ with another hit inside the box. Janga completed his hat-trick in the 85’ by converting from the penalty spot.

Niall Reid-Stephen took one back for the visitors in the 90'+2 on a penalty kick opportunity for Barbados.

Gervane Kastaneer struck on the breakaway seconds after to add a fourth for Curaçao.

Curaçao will visit Aruba in Oranjestad on Saturday. Barbados will host Haiti in Bridgetown on Sunday.

Nicaragua vs. Montserrat

Nicaragua won 4-1 against Montserrat in Group D at the National Football Stadium in Managua, Nicaragua.

Jaime Moreno opened the scoring in the 4’ with a header inside the box. Brandon Barzey tied the game in the 10’ as the visitors got on the board.

Junior Arteaga retook the lead for Nicaragua in the 23' off a free kick attempt towards the near post.

Jacob Montes extended the lead for the hosts in the 70' with a swing of his left foot at the edge of the box.

Harold Medina added a fourth with a left-footed strike in the box in the 90’+3.

Nicaragua will visit Belize on Saturday in Belmopan. Montserrat will remain in Managua to face Panama on Sunday at the National Stadium.

Guatemala vs. Dominica

Guatemala earned a 6-nil draw against Dominica in Group E at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City.

Alejandro Galindo struck first for the hosts in the 3', in what ended as the match-winning goal.

Allen Yanes extended the lead in the 28' with a header inside the box, connecting on a perfectly placed ball by Oscar Santis.

Galindo earned his second goal of the night in the 49' by striking on a rebound inside the box just moments after his long distance attempt was denied by Glenson Prince.

Rubio Rubin added his name to the scoresheet in the 59' with a header in the box, connecting on a pass from the left flank by Jose Morales.

Jose Martinez struck with a header in the 79', seconds after subbing on, to convert on a corner kick opportunity.

Jose Morales added a sixth for Guatemala in the 84' with a strike from distance.

Guatemala will play the British Virgin Islands on Saturday in Road Town. Dominica hosts Jamaica on Sunday in Roseau.
