CIUDAD DE MEXICO – Mexico and El Salvador will each close out their respective campaigns in the Third Round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022 on Wednesday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
For Mexico, it is a golden opportunity to secure their place in Qatar with either a win or a draw, while a chance to make some history beckons for El Salvador.
Overall, Mexico have a firm grasp on the rivalry between these two sides in Concacaf WCQ, with a record of 10W-0D-3L overall, scoring 30 goals and conceding just 10.
All three Salvadoran wins have come in El Salvador, making Mexico a perfect 7W-0D-0L in home qualifiers against the Cuscatlecos nb while outscoring them 20-3 in the process. In fact, El Salvador have not scored in their last two visits to the Estadio Azteca to face El Tricolor.
Hector Herrera of Mexico and Roberto Dominguez of El Salvador in action on September 2, 2016.
The last Salvadoran player to find the back of the net on Mexican soil in WCQ was Julio Martinez, who notched the lone goal in a 4-1 defeat in WCQ for South Africa 2010.
Following their 2-0 win at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador last October, Mexico have now won their last six WCQs against El Salvador, with the last victory for the Central Americans coming on June 6, 2009 in WCQ for South Africa 2010 when Julio Martinez and Eliseo Quintanilla countered Cuauhtémoc Blanco’s goal to lift El Salvador to a 2-1 win over El Tricolor.
Therefore, a win on Thursday night for El Salvador would not only represent the country’s first WCQ win in Mexico, but it would also be their first goal scored in the Estadio Azteca since that 2009 qualifier, while a result for Mexico would nail down a World Cup berth and keep their home unbeaten streak against El Salvador In WCQ intact.
