MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United announced Monday that it has transferred Mexico international Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old forward signed a three-year deal with the German club.
Since his arrival from Liga MX’s Guadalajara in 2010, Hernandez scored 57 goals in 159 games for United, winning a pair of Premier League titles.
He spent a majority of the 2014/15 season on loan at Real Madrid – netting nine times in 33 games in all competitions – but came back to England after the agreement expired. His biggest moment in Spain came in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, when he notched the only goal in a two-game series against Atletico Madrid.
"I know the English Premier League and the Primera Division in Spain, two of the three major European leagues,” Hernandez told the Bayer Leverkusen website. “Now I want to experience the Bundesliga.
"It's wonderful that I get to play for a club like Bayer Leverkusen. It's a great opportunity for me and I want to achieve something here."
With Mexico, Hernandez has the distinction of scoring in two FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014), a FIFA Confederations Cup (2013) and a CONCACAF Gold Cup (2011). The 70-time capped star was the 2011 Gold Cup’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot winner, but he missed the 2015 Gold Cup with a collarbone injury.
