MIAMI, Florida – The Panamanian Women’s National Team made their debut in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Monday at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia, seeing a 4-0 defeat to Brazil in Group F.
Despite the defeat, Panama GK and 2018 Concacaf W Championship Golden Glove winner Yenith Bailey delivered another top performance on the international stage in making several top saves.
Brazil wasted no time in looking for a goal. In the 1’, MF Adriana controlled the ball to shoot for goal in the area, however, Bailey denied her chance in a one-on-one encounter.
The first goal came in the 19’ when FW Debinha sent in a cross from the left side and FW Ary Borges headed into net for a 1-0 lead.
Bailey was called into action again in the 36’ to stop a banger from FW Lauana in the 36’, sending the ball over the crossbar.
La Canarinha found the back of the net again in the 39’ to make it 2-0, as Borges scored via header once more after DF Tamires sent in a cross.
Brazil then made it 3-0 through FW Bia Zaneratto early in the second half, in the 48’, when she latched onto a backheeled pass from Borges.
Panama looked to strike back and score their first ever Women’s World Cup goal and it nearly happened in the 58’ when DF Catrina Baltrip-Reyes’ attempt barely missed.
Borges scored the first hat-trick of this Women’s World Cup in the 70’ when she received a pass from FW Geyse on a cross and scored on a header for the third time on the evening.
There was one final chance for Panama to score coming in the 90+5’, as FW Riley Tanner tried a low shot, but GK Leticia stopped her efforts.
The next test for Las Canaleras will be on Saturday against another Concacaf team, Jamaica, at the Perth Rectangular Stadium at Perth, Australia.
