Tori Penso of USA to referee Women’s World Cup Final

MIAMI, Florida – Tori Penso of the United States will make history this Sunday as the first ever Concacaf referee to officiate a FIFA Women’s World Cup Final when she will be on the whistle for the Final of Australia/New Zealand 2023 between Spain and England in Sydney, Australia.

Penso is one of six referees from the United States at Australia/New Zealand and will officiate her fifth match of the tournament.

Penso served as the referee in the Germany-Morocco and Switzerland-New Zealand group stage matches, plus the France-Morocco Round of 16 and Australia-England semifinal matches.

Concacaf referees have been part of previous Women’s World Cup Finals, but both in the capacity of Assistant Referee.

Mexico’s Maria del Socorro Rodriguez was the first Concacaf official to be part of a Women’s World Cup Final, working as the Assistant Referee in the 1995 Final between Norway and Germany.

In the 2007 Women’s World Cup Final between Germany and Brazil, Isabel Tovar and Rita Munoz of Mexico served as Assistant Referees.

Penso’s historical appointment by the FIFA Referees Committee caps what has been a landmark Women’s World Cup for Concacaf referees.

Of the 107 referees selected by the FIFA Referees Committee for the Women’s World Cup, 21 hailed from the Concacaf region across seven different Member Associations: United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Suriname.
