Club Leon poised to put stamp on first SCCL series win

LEON, Mexico – Club Leon are poised to earn their first ever Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League series win when they host CD Guastatoya of Guatemala in the second leg of the 2022 SCCL Round of 16 on Tuesday night at the Estadio Leon in Leon.

The Mexican side picked up a 2-0 win in last week’s first leg in Guatemala on goals from Omar Fernandez and Elias Hernandez and now can secure their place in the quarterfinal round with either a win, draw or a defeat by a single goal.

La Fiera did well to keep Guastatoya’s attacking players at bay, including veteran Mexican striker Luis Landin, who scored three goals for the Chapines in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League.

Guastatoya’s SCL campaign from last season could be a source of inspiration, however, as they rallied from a late 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 with Costa Rican powerhouse Alajuelense, eventually punching their ticket to the SCCL.

That same warrior spirit will be needed to come back from a two-goal margin in Mexico on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Club Leon will fancy their chances of advancing, as they own a 6W-3D-1L record in SCCL home matches.

In addition to Fernandez and Hernandez, attacker Victor Davila has been in great form, with an assist in last week’s win, plus a goal and an assist over the weekend in Liga MX. Veteran MF Luis Montes is also one to watch after he supplied the assist on the Hernandez goal in Guatemala.
