Motagua, Tauro renew acquaintances in pivotal first leg

TEGUCIGALPA – Honduran club Motagua and Tauro FC of Panama will renew acquaintances in the first leg of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals on Thursday night at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Ucles in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The series marks the second SCL tie between the two sides, with the first happening in 2018 in the semifinals when Motagua eliminated the Canalero club 3-2 on aggregate.

There is certainly a long history when it comes to Honduran teams facing clubs from Panama and by the narrowest of margins the Panamanian teams hold an advantage with a 4W-3D-3L record.

Motagua are no strangers to deep runs in the SCL. The club is not only the winningest team in SCL history with 14 victories, but they also have the most goals (42) and have the most games with at least one goal scored (24).

But it is not just the attack that gets the job done for Motagua. GK Jonathan Rougier is an anchor in net and the 2019 SCL Golden Glove winner already has five saves in the current edition.

Helping matters is the play of players like Angel Tejeda and Roberto Moreira up top, with Tejeda leading the team in shots in the Round of 16 with eight and Moreira totaling seven goals in his SCL career.

Tauro will look to counter with some experience as well, namely Edwin Aguilar, who has a knack for finding the back of the net in Concacaf tournaments.

The veteran dangerman is the club’s all-time top scorer in the SCL with six goals and will be supported in attack by Miguel Camargo, a player who took four shots over the two legs in their Round of 16 series win versus Sporting San Miguelito.
