TEGUCIGALPA – Honduran club Motagua have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf League after posting a 2-0 win over Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic in the second leg of their Round of 16 series on Wednesday night at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Ucles in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The result earned the Catrachos a 3-0 victory on aggregate and a date in the final eight with Panamanian side Tauro.
There was very little in the way of chances through the first 45 minutes. Motagua controlled the tempo but breaking down the Cibao defense was a different matter altogether and the Honduran hosts never really tested visiting GK Miguel Lloyd.
The best chance for either side came in the final seconds of the half when a Motagua corner kick ended with Carlos Melendez smacking a header that struck the crossbar.
They might have missed by inches at the end of the first half, but shortly after the start of the second half, Motagua would get their goal in the 51’ when Angel Tejeda squeezed his way past a pair of Cibao defenders and directed a header into net for a 1-0 Motagua lead in the match and 2-0 on aggregate.

Motagua were in full control and it took two great saves from Lloyd, first denying a Jonathan Nunez shot and then stopping a Diego Rodriguez free kick, to keep it a one-goal game.
The insurance goal would have to wait until the 90th minute and it was a rolling effort from Eddie Hernandez that bounced past Lloyd, off the post and into net to complete the 2-0 scoreline in the game and 3-0 on aggregate.
