MIAMI, Florida – Former Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Team player and youth national team coach Clyde Leon tragically died on Wednesday at age 37.
The thoughts of everyone at Concacaf are with Clyde Leon’s family, and with our friends and colleagues at the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) and Clyde’s former clubs.
In a press statement, the TTFA announced that Leon died of a heart attack.
“Clyde was a loyal and humble servant to football who has left some wonderful memories that will never fade from our hearts,” said the TTFA in an official statement. “May his Gentle Soul Rest in Peace.”
The former MF made 48 appearances with the Soca Warriors, scoring one goal. Leon made his debut with Trinidad and Tobago in a March 2, 2004 friendly versus Guyana and later wore the captain’s armband for his national team.
Leon also worked as the Men’s Under-17 National Team Head Coach and was an assistant coach for the Under-15 team.
Leon enjoyed a prolific club career, notably at Trinidad and Tobago side W Connection where he won the T&T Pro League title in 2011-12.
The defensive midfielder appeared in 12 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League matches with the club, scoring his team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss at Guatemala’s Comunicaciones in the 2009-10 group stage, followed by a sensational free kick for a goal W Connection’s 1-1 draw with Mexican giants Chivas in the group stage of the 2012-13 SCCL.
