MIAMI, Florida – Panama and Canada each wrapped up their campaigns in the 2023 FIFA Under-17 Men’s World Cup in Indonesia on Thursday in their group stage finales.
Panama played to their second consecutive draw in a 1-1 final with Ecuador at the Manahan Stadium in Surakarta.
Despite the draw, Panama finished fourth in Group A on goal difference and will not advance in the tournament.
Elkin Ruiz handed Ecuador a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal in the 24’, but Panama never threw in the towel and got back on level terms in the 79’ through Oldemar Castillo, who scored his second goal of the tournament.
Castillo ran onto a flicked-on header and darted between a pair of Ecuadorian defenders before rounding the goalkeeper and scoring.
Canada completed their Group B campaign with a 5-1 defeat against Mali at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.
Mali raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but Canada did cut the deficit down to a goal, 2-1, in the 45’ by Richard Chukwu, who turned in a shot off a corner kick.
But the second half belonged to Mali, who tacked on another three goals to complete the scoreline.
