BARCELONA – Spanish La Liga side Espanyol announced Tuesday that it acquired Oscar Duarte from Belgium’s Club Brugge and signed the Costa Rica international to a contract through June 2019.

Duarte started his professional career win 2008 with Saprissa, the Costa Rican club named after Ricardo Saprissa, a former player with and honorary president of Espanyol.

After a successful trial, he moved to Club Brugge in 2013, scoring nine goals in 114 games.

The 26-year-old defender is best known for his performances during Costa Rica’s run to the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he appeared in four games and scored in a 3-1 win over Uruguay. Later that same year, Duarte helped the Ticos to the 2014 Central American Cup title.

He has also played in one CONCACAF Gold Cup (2011) and a Copa America (2011).
